A Message from the President

July 2016

Happy Summer to all of you. I hope you are having a great time reading and staying cool.

Here’s what’s been happening with the Friends:

  • Book Sale: The May book sale produced the lowest gross receipts ever! Our objective is to provide additional income to the Jacksonville Public Library so that they can give the community some extras that the limited budget (see the proposed budget below) does not permit. So, the more we make the more we can give. It isn’t that our customers don’t buy enough books–rather that we do not have enough customers. We need your help! Please help us get the word out that the next sale is August 26 – 28 (click here for more details). Tell your friends, neighbors, relatives, folks at work and everyone you know that we have great bargains and shopping at our warehouse is fun! Word of mouth advertising is the best advertising we can get.
  • Survey: Have you answered our survey? If you haven’t yet done this please click here and take a minute to give us your thoughts. We are trying to make your shopping experience even better.
  • Volunteer Luncheon: The FJPL volunteers had an appreciation luncheon on June 11 at Blue Bamboo Restaurant. The food was delicious and the conversation flowing as we finally had a chance to talk with each other in a relaxed and conducive setting. While we have a good time working at the warehouse it was really nice to be able to hear more about each other and our activities beyond book sorting.

  • Volunteer of the Year: The highlight of the luncheon was recognizing our Volunteer of the Year, Helen Hawkins. Helen is always at the warehouse on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday working primarily in the Fiction area. She not only works hard but also keeps us in a good mood with funny stories and great jokes. Congratulations to Helen.

  • JPL Budget: Finally, the City Council is now in budget mode. If you communicate with your council representative please remind them of the great service that the Jacksonville Public Library provides. And the greater the budget, the greater the service.
